GA4 Troubleshooting and Measurement FAQ
GA4 provides powerful insight, but only when the underlying measurement setup is accurate and consistent. Many organisations discover problems only when the numbers do not look right, events do not appear or channels behave unpredictably. This FAQ brings together the issues people most often encounter and what they usually mean. It reflects the diagnostic work we carry out when helping organisations restore reliable and meaningful reporting. If you are still unsure where an issue sits, our GA4 and Tag Manager audit can help clarify what is happening in your setup.
Attribution and data discrepancies
Why do GA4 and Search Console not match
GA4 and Search Console measure different things and use different counting methods. GA4 records what happens on your website, while Search Console records how your site appears and performs in Google search. They also apply different timeframes and filtering rules. Large discrepancies usually indicate a measurement issue, such as missing tracking on certain pages, blocked scripts or redirects that interrupt tracking. If you need help diagnosing this, our GA4 configuration service can support you.
Why do GA4 and Google Ads not match
GA4 attributes conversions based on user behaviour, while Google Ads attributes them based on ad interactions. They use different attribution windows and different rules for allocating conversions. Large gaps often point to cross site tracking problems, auto tagging issues, blocked scripts or event naming structures that GA4 cannot match to a conversion.
Why are GA4 sessions lower than Universal Analytics
GA4 defines sessions differently and does not create new sessions in situations where Universal Analytics would have done so. Lower session numbers are often normal, but very low numbers may indicate configuration issues, blocked scripts or sequencing problems that prevent GA4 from recording initial activity.
Why does GA4 show fewer conversions than expected
Conversions in GA4 must be defined as events. If an event is misnamed, fires at the wrong time or is blocked by a consent tool, GA4 may not record it as a conversion. Missing parameters, duplicate triggers or conflicting scripts can also cause conversions to appear incomplete. Our Tag Manager configuration service can help resolve event and naming issues.
Why are my UTM parameters not recording
UTM loss is usually caused by redirects that strip tracking parameters before a user reaches the landing page. It can also happen when consent tools block analytics on the first pageview or when the link itself contains incomplete or incorrect UTM syntax.
Event tracking and missing data
Why are my GA4 events not firing
Events may fail when triggers are not aligned with page conditions or when they fire before the data layer is ready. Conflicts between hard coded analytics scripts and Tag Manager can also prevent events from firing. Consent mode may block events entirely on the first pageview. If you believe the issue relates to Tag Manager, our Tag Manager troubleshooting FAQ covers common causes.
Why is debug mode not showing my events
Debug mode requires specific browser, cookie and permission conditions. Ad blockers, privacy extensions, preview mode misconfiguration and network restrictions can prevent debug information from appearing.
Why is GA4 not collecting pageviews
Pageviews may be missing when the GA4 configuration tag does not fire, when scripts are blocked by consent tools or when redirects complete before tracking loads. Legacy analytics scripts often cause conflicts that interrupt pageview collection.
Why do I see duplicate events
Duplicate events appear when the same event is triggered both through Tag Manager and through hard coded scripts. They can also occur when multiple tags share the same trigger or when configuration tags fire repeatedly due to incorrect sequencing. A GA4 and Tag Manager audit can help identify the exact source of duplication.
Channel and source issues
Why is social traffic showing as direct
This usually indicates missing UTM parameters or redirects that remove tracking information. If scripts are blocked on the first pageview, GA4 cannot attribute the session correctly and records it as direct.
Why are email clicks showing as direct
Email traffic must be tagged with UTMs. Without UTMs, emails cannot be recognised as a channel. Some platforms also use redirect paths that remove UTMs unless configured correctly.
Why is paid traffic going into organic
This may happen when auto tagging is not active, when cross domain tracking is incomplete or when consent tools block the information that Google Ads requires for attribution.
Why is everything showing as unassigned
A high proportion of unassigned traffic usually signals a fundamental problem with the way source and medium are being collected. This often relates to missing UTMs, blocked scripts, consent interruptions or conflicting tracking scripts.
Technical, consent and sequencing issues
Why is cross site tracking not working
Cross site tracking must be configured in both GA4 and Tag Manager. If the exact domain structure is not listed, GA4 treats movements as external referrals. Incorrect linker settings and mismatched protocols often cause this.
Why do I see self referrals
Self referrals appear when GA4 does not recognise a domain as part of your own site. This is often caused by missing cross domain tracking, legacy scripts or incomplete Tag Manager settings.
Why is my GA4 data delayed
GA4 processes data in batches and may take up to 24 hours to settle. Longer delays often indicate blocked scripts, server side caching or consent tools preventing data collection on the first pageview.
Why is GA4 not receiving data from Tag Manager
This usually occurs when the GA4 configuration tag is not firing, when triggers do not match page conditions or when consent prevents analytics from loading. Network restrictions and script conflicts can also block data.
Data quality and reliability
Why do I see traffic spikes that look like spam
Automated traffic can reach GA4 when certain filters are not in place or when spam bots mimic human behaviour. Reviewing event patterns and behaviour metrics helps identify whether the spike is genuine.
Why does GA4 sample data
Sampling occurs in the Explore workspace when queries exceed certain thresholds. Standard reports are not sampled. Sampling does not indicate a tracking error but limits the precision of exploratory reports.
Why is my GA4 data inconsistent
Inconsistent data often reflects competing scripts, blocked pageviews, missing parameters or Tag Manager sequencing issues. A structured GA4 and Tag Manager audit is usually the best way to identify the root causes.
